EuropeEurope's turbulent history and weather proved to be quite hard going. If Africa can be said to be beautiful, Europe certainly is very pretty ...

Norway

DSCF5490~0.jpg

Norway, our final destination, is as beautiful as they say - the fjords are fantastic !

Finland

DSCF5296.jpg

Reaching Finland was a major milestone for us and also a wonderful opportunity to visit our best friends ...

Estonia

DSCF5214.jpg

Estonia was our last country before we hit Scandinavia. Nothing was going to stop us now!

Latvia

DSCF5086.jpg

We were delighted at Latvia's capital city, Riga. Our visit coincided with one by George Bush

Lithuania

DSCF5055.jpg

We passed through Lithuania rapidly due to inclement weather. Main regret: not seeing the Jimi Hendrix statue in Vilnius

Poland

DSCF4945.jpg

We found Poland's harsh history and bitterly cold climate to be quite severe. Krakow was delightful, having survived the wars intact

Slovakia

DSCF4708.jpg

We passed very briefly through Slovakia, which failed to impress

Hungary

DSCF4592.jpg

Hungary was a fascinating place with a harrowing history. We have long wanted to visit Budapest - and the city did not disappoint

Slovenia

DSCF4498.jpg

Slovenia was small, but perfectly formed. Definitely a "pretty" country. It took us only 3 days to pass through, even though we veered off the beaten track.

Croatia

DSCF4257.jpg

Croatia is simply outrageously beautiful. A highlight of our travels was a walk along the walls of the old town of Dubrovnik, which hides its many war scars well

Montenegro

DSCF4101.jpg

Montenegro has it all ... mountains, lakes and sea ... and apparently a fair amount of carcenoma from the depleted uranium ammunition used in "the war". It is a hauntingly beautiful little fragment of country populated by a broken nation

Albania

We only visited Albania for one day, so our opinion of this country was not a fair one.

Macedonia

DSCF4062.jpg

(The former Yugoslav Republic of) Macedonia boasts some magnificent lakeland and mountain scenery, but is still too far off the beaten track to receive many foreign tourists

Greece

DSCF3947.jpg

Greece was the perfect place to recharge our batteries literally and figuratively. We did not explore far - because we could not get compulsory third-party insurance for our vehicle - but the parts we saw along the Aegean Sea were gorgeous and the people so nice! So we nested and rested, waiting for the European winter to pass - and the road to Nordkapp to re-open ...

Turkey

DSCF3887.jpg

Turkey is wonderful: a mix of ancient and modern; east and west; hot and (currently) cold. The cold weather affected our camera (and our fingers), so there aren't as many pictures as we would have liked ...

ArabiaArabia forms our road link between Africa and Europe. Being the cradle of civilisation, it contains some fascinating ancient sites

Jordan

DSCF3014.jpg

Although Jordan is relatively small, it has some world-famous sites, including the stunning desert landscapes of Wadi Rum and the ancient city of Petra, carved out of solid rock

Syria

DSCF3478.jpg

Our brief stay in Syria was overshadowed by the assassination of Rafik Hariri in neighbouring Syrian-controlled Lebanon. We did not linger longer ...

AfricaAfrica is amazing. The sights are awesome, the roads hard and the people delightful

Egypt

DSCF2394.jpg

Egypt is such a fascinating country that we have officially become residents for six months. Actually that was the only way we could apply for our Syrian visas, necessary for our onward journey. It's a great country.

Sudan

DSCF0922.jpg

The severity of the Sudanese countryside was amply compensated by the hospitality of the people, who were friendly, but not too friendly. We were left in peace when we wanted privacy ... a rare luxury after Ethiopia !

Ethiopia

DSCF9125.jpg

Ethiopia is a very different part of Africa. Forget all the stereotypes that you might have of the place ... it's full of amazing people and food ! The begging children, however, are from hell ...

Kenya

DSCF8516.jpg

We enjoyed Kenya thoroughly and managed to visit all the Rift Valley Lakes, with the exception of the tiny, inaccessible one just south of Lake Turkana. The Rift Valley really comes alive in Kenya ! Nairobi was pleasantly civilized - and we did not experience any of its supposedly notorious crime

Uganda

DSCF7741.jpg

We loved Uganda - especially the fact that the people were friendly - but not too friendly. It has been the only country where we could stop at the side of the road and eat lunch in peace. It was also really great touching base with our friends, the Cambridges, again

Rwanda

DSCF7440.jpg

Rwanda was not a feel-good country. It is, however, one of the best places to visit the Mountain Gorillas

Dem. Rep. of Congo

DSCF7523.jpg

We made a brief day-trip - on foot - to the town of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo, to view the results of the fairly recent volcanic eruption. We were not hassled at all and felt perfectly safe. The situation has, of course, changed drastically since then ...

Tanzania

DSCF6892.jpg

We revelled in and on the mountains, volcanoes, national parks, beaches, deserts and Rift Valley lakes of Tanzania ... a destination that has it all

Zanzibar

DSCF6456.jpg

A trip to Zanzibar is a must! We enjoyed staying in a hotel for the first time on our trip. We timed our visit to coincide with a music and film festival, the "Festival of the Dhow Countries" so there were lots of interesting visitors and activities

Malawi

DSCF5267.jpg

After wild Mozambique, we found friendly Malawi a little too tame. We entered Malawi again via a tiny, unmanned border post in north-east Zambia. That time we had to drive all the way to Mzuzu to complete immigration formalities

10 files, last one added on Feb 02, 2005

Zambia

DSCF5643.jpg

We enjoyed going off the beaten track in Zambia, skirting the South and North Luangwa National Parks along roads which at times were nothing more than bicycle tracks and through villages that had not seen vehicles - or Mzungus - for a very long time!

6 files, last one added on Oct 05, 2004

Mozambique

DSCF5058.jpg

Mozambique was a fascinating country. We travelled all the way to the north and enjoyed it thoroughly, especially the historical Mozambique Island

31 files, last one added on Feb 02, 2005

Lesotho

DSCF3902.jpg

We visited the mountain kingdom of Lesotho for one day just to experience the amazing Sani Pass - up and down !

South Africa

DSCF3503~0.jpg

South Africa is, as the tourist brochures say, a world in one country ... but we wanted to see more
